His immediate guru was Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. Tandon gave up his legal practice and plunged into the freedom movement. As an educationist, Tandon worked hard to spread adult education. He also fought for making Hindi a national language. He was elected President of the Indian National Congress after independence. The nation's greatest honour, the Bharat Ratna was bestowed on him in 1961. Purushottam Das Tandon died in 1962.
