Evolution of Telephones

The telephone was first invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell.Within seven years of its invention, the telephone exchanges were established in Bombay, Madras and Calcutta. By 1907,the central battery was introduced to replace the earliercranking practice. Automatic telephone came to India in 1914 at Simla. The Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) came into beingin 1948, a year after independence. This film presents evolution of telephones in India.

Swar Ganga - Gangubai Hangal

An autobiographical about Gangubai Hangal, one of the doyens of Indian classical music, Gangubai was in her seventies when this film was made. Gangubai was born in Dharwar in 1913. Her mother Ambabai was a Carnatic music (Karnataka Sangeet) vocalist. But she liked the Hindustani style very much. Ambabai moved from Dharwar to Hubli, where a family friend persuaded the Kirana gharana maestro, Sawai Gandharva to accept Gangubai as his disciple. Gangubai had to face lot of hurdles in learning music in those conservative days.

Khayal

Here in this film about the Indian classical music, the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar and the santoor maestro Shiv Kumar Sharma explain their concepts of a raga, a gharana, and their world of music. Characteristics of various gharana or schools such as the Jaipur gharana, the Kirana gharana, the Agra gharana, the Patiala gharana, the Mewati gharana are explained along with the contribution made by their leading exponents.

9th Asian Games

India (New Delhi) was the venue of the first Asian Games held in March 1951. Eleven countries sent 489 competitors to these Games. India fielded an athletic contingent of 49 and bagged 10golds, one short of the top performer - Japan. In the wake of the 1951 Asian Games came a renaissance in sports and games as this film reiterates while presenting the history of the Asian Games. New Delhi again becomes the venue of the IX Asian Games in November 1982. This film presents various activities of how India is getting ready to host the event.
