A Silent Art

A film is about the Indian pantomime - the art of gestures, movement and expression, where no spoken words are used. In India, the art of mime comes from Bharat's Natya Shastra, but its evolution as an art form for full-length presentation is of recent origin. This film presents an ardent exponent of mime, Jagesh Datta and the Jagesh Mime Academy established by him in Calcutta. This institute is affiliated both to the Central Sangeet Natak Academy and Rabindra Bharati University.

Indian Talkie

While drawing the history of the Indian talkie which began in1931 with the first sound film Alam Ara, this film includes interviews of the veterans of the Indian film industry, such asJairaj, LV Prasad, JBH Wadia, Sohrab Modi, Satyajit Ray,Raj Kapoor, BR Chopra, Mrinal Sen, Tarachand Barjatia and BasuBhattacharya. LV Prasad : "I joined Imperial Film Compnay in theyear 1930. I acted in Alam Ara. Well, after finishing the picture, when I went to see it, I think it was in Majestic cinema, I saw people thrilled. Previously they used to see only silent pictures.

Therayattam ( Worship Dances of Malabar )

One of the oldest forms of organized dance worship in north Malabar of Kerala is the "Therayattam". The performers can improvise the dance to suit the occasion.

Durga

Celebrated between the seventh and tenth day of the waxing moon in the month of Ashwin, the five-day festival of Durga Pooja (Prayer ofthe Goddess Durga) is a major religious-social event in the State of West Bengal. The Pooja coinciding with the festival of Dussera in the rest of India, is also the time for family reunion sand for meeting friends.Durga Pooja became popular in Bengal in the middle of the 18th century. It is believed that Maharaja Krishna chandra of Nadia,a contemporary of Nawab Siraj-Ud-Daullah, popularised the autumn festival.

Yakshagana

Yakshagana is a rich folk dance-drama of Karnataka in South India. This theatre form is over five centuries old. This film examines the salient features of this art form and its historical background.Yakshagana still continues to entertain people with tales of romance, adventure, intrigue - from the great Hindu epics and legends. Earlier days, the Yakshagana theatre was known as Bhagavatara attar, which revolved round the stories of Lord Krishna and Vishnu.

Dhrupad

The film is on "Dhrupad Raag". In its existing form Dhrupad can be traced back to a thousand years of living traditions. Its origin, however, can be linked with the emergence of very first classical forms, follwing the break-up of tribal culture and the consequent development of folk music in early villages and of classical music in city/states.

The Temple Nagaswaram

Nagaswaram is one of the oldest musical instruments, spanning both the temple-ritual context and the concert platform called the Mangala Vadhyam, it is also played in marriages and auspicious occasions.
