Floating Bank

Sunder bans, the massive delta of the mighty Ganga. Little had changed in Sunder bans since centuries. Living under the constant threat of poverty, people here have been easy victims of the usurious money lenders. However, on March 21, 1976 a nationalised bank arrived on the Sunder bans shores for the first time. It was a floating bank aboard a boat. This "bank for the people" gradually brought happiness and prosperity to poor folks.

Durga

Celebrated between the seventh and tenth day of the waxing moon in the month of Ashwin, the five-day festival of Durga Pooja (Prayer ofthe Goddess Durga) is a major religious-social event in the State of West Bengal. The Pooja coinciding with the festival of Dussera in the rest of India, is also the time for family reunion sand for meeting friends.Durga Pooja became popular in Bengal in the middle of the 18th century. It is believed that Maharaja Krishna chandra of Nadia,a contemporary of Nawab Siraj-Ud-Daullah, popularised the autumn festival.

Central Excise

By imposing excise duty on certain goods, the Central Government earns revenue. This film underlines the fact that the central excise is not a tax in the real sense but a contribution made by the public for the general good of the nation. The rate of excise duty is kept at the minimal level in case of the cottage industries, co-operative societies, etc. Certain items such as yarn for handlooms, etc. are also exempted from its purview.

Bombay Port

The port of Bombay is India's premier gateway of trade and commerce. Bombay harbour is considered to be one of the safest and most spacious in the world. This port has been administered by Bombay Port Trust since 1873. The Bombay port handles 17 million tonnes of cargo every year (1982 figures) or 2000 tonnes of cargo every hour. This film provides information on various facilities that this port offers, including the dry dock, the ship breaking yard, etc.

A Womens University

A film about Smt. Nathibai Damodar Thakersey (SNDT) Indian Women’s University. This university imparts education exclusively to women. It was Sir Vithaldas Thackersey who donated Rs.1500, 000 ways back in 1920to commemorate the memory of his mother. SNDT was given statutory recognition in 1951. Lady Premleelaben Thackersey was nominated its first Vice Chancellor. This university has now 23 affiliated and conducted colleges, 15 post-graduate and research departments, 3 campuses, over 20,000 students and 600 faculty members.
